Several key developments shaped Pinecrest’s evolution. In the early 1900s, railroad tycoon Henry Flagler used land at U.S. 1 and Southwest 102nd Street as a staging area during construction of the Overseas Railroad to the Florida Keys.
In 1936, the attraction Parrot Jungle was founded on twenty acres at Red Road and SW 111th Street by Franz and Louise Scherr; over time, it drew international visitors and helped orient the community around green space and tourism.
Through the 1950s and 1960s, Pinecrest evolved rapidly as large ranch-style homes were built on acre-sized lots, planting the seeds of its lush, landscaped character and suburban residential identity.
In August 1992, the region suffered severe damage from Hurricane Andrew, and in response to growth and service concerns, the community incorporated as the Village of Pinecrest on March 12, 1996, empowering local governance and services.
Today, Pinecrest is recognized for its leafy residential appeal, large lots, high-quality schools, and for preserving parks such as Pinecrest Gardens, the historic Parrot Jungle site dedicated as a public park in 2003.
